This afternoon in the school library, students from SOA competed in the school-wide Poetry Out Loud contest. The competition attracts drama and creative writing majors, but students from all majors are eligible. Students qualified for today’s event by winning recitals in their classrooms. They competed in the library and were judged by a panel against the follow criteria:
- physical presence
- voice and articulation
- dramatic appropriateness
- level of difficulty
- evidence of understanding
- overall performance
Students performed poems such as “Abondoned Farmhouse” by Ted Kooser, “Snow Day” by Billy Collins, and “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou.
The winners are:
- Savannah Miller
- Alex Peoples
- Kat Murchison — tied for third
- Emily Hart — tied for third
Ms. Miller, a creative writing major, will go on to represent SOA at regionals. Last year she finished 2nd in the state championship. State winners go on to a national championship. The winner of that competition wins $20,000.
